The year 2025 began with the installation of officers on January 4th. Once again, the event was a lovely family affair. The ceremony set a warm and inclusive tone for the year ahead as the newly installed officers prepared to lead with dedication and purpose. Our first stated communication of the year took place under the leadership of Worshipful Master Bob Curwen. As with any leadership transition, there were a few rusty spots as everyone settled into their new roles, but the evening ran smoothly and cooperatively. The fellowship meal was thoughtfully prepared to be entirely gluten-free to accommodate Brother Christopher Holmes’ newly recognized dietary restrictions. This gesture by the Junior Warden set the tone for camaraderie and inclusiveness. The meal, often challenging to get right, proved that gluten-free can be both texturally correct and delicious! The effort was well-received by all in attendance. During the evening, we welcomed a new prospect and a visiting brother from Hiram Lodge No. 1. Unfortunately, the prospect later informed the Worshipful Master that he would not be moving forward with affiliation as his spiritual beliefs did not align with Freemasonry. While disappointing, the prospect’s sincere and thoughtful follow-up was appreciated. One key business item during the evening was the completion of officer installations for those who could not attend the January 4 ceremony. Right Worshipful Brother Bob Furce graciously conducted the installations, ensuring the Lodge was properly staffed in keeping with Grand Lodge rules. A highlight of the evening was Junior Warden Rick Cipot’s educational lecture on the Masonic connections to the Statue of Liberty. His presentation was both insightful and thought-provoking, providing an excellent primer for the Lodge’s upcoming trip to visit this iconic landmark. Brother Cipot’s knowledge and passion for the topic set the stage for what promises to be a meaningful experience for those making the trip. Overall, the first stated communication of 2025 was productive and energizing. With this momentum, the Lodge is well-positioned to build upon its successes and continue fostering the principles of brotherhood, charity, and education. |

On December 23, 2024, Ashlar-Aspetuck Lodge No.142, Easton, Connecticut, and Hiram Lodge No. 18, Sandy Hook, Connecticut, united in collaboration and universal brotherhood to raise Brothers Andrew Holms, Tomas Curwen, and Jose Fuentes to the sublime degree of Master Mason. This degree truly became a family affair, with sons, brothers, cousins, and uncles in attendance to participate in this momentous occasion and help raise our newest brothers to the sublime degree of Master Mason.
Worshipful Master Christopher Holms and Most Worshipful Past Grand Master George Greytak of Hiram 18, shared duties as the Worshipful Master throughout the evening, creating a collaborative and unified experience that underscored the spirit of brotherhood. Brothers from both lodges worked as a cohesive unit, delivering a powerful and meaningful ritual as shared members of the degree team. The evening was also enriched by Worshipful Brother Adam Plotnick, a great friend to AA142, who delivered the charge flawlessly.
The evening carried a deep sense of tradition and heritage as Worshipful Master Christopher Holms presided over the raising of his own son, Brother Andrew Holms, alongside Brother Tomas Curwen as “Lewis” Master Masons. As Worshipful Brother Adam Plotnick explained when presenting their Lewis jewels;
In Masonic tradition, the term “Lewis” symbolizes the bond between a father and son who are both Master Masons. The term is deeply rooted in the practices of operative masons of the past, where a “Lewis” was a tool used to lift and support heavy stones during construction. Just as the Lewis provided strength and support to its load, a “Lewis” Mason represents the strength, hope, and continuity of Masonic values passed from father to son.
Brother Tomas Curwen’s father, Brother William Curwen Jr., and his brother, Brother William Curwen III, and extended family were also present to assist in his raising. This ceremony beautifully celebrated the importance of the family in Freemasonry and the responsibility of passing Masonic principles to future generations while adding youthful vitality to the craft.
The evening was further supported by the presence of many visiting brothers from surrounding lodges and members of the Grand Lodge of Connecticut. Our lodge welcomed fresh faces from several lodges not often seen at Ashlar-Aspetuck. With approximately 35 brothers present, the Lodge room was full, and the fellowship before the ceremony was equally energetic, filled with camaraderie.
Among the distinguished visitors was Worshipful Brother Robert Heyfron from London England, who recently became an honorary member of AA142. He shared his ...exhilaration... at witnessing his first Master Mason degree in the United States. He noted that degrees in England (at those pivotal moments) are more, shall we say...subdued. However, he stated that at its core, the MM degree is the same as England. He did mention that there were subtle nuanced differences, but they would be typical of differences he experienced between Mother Lodges across England. His reflections added a unique perspective, emphasizing the universality of Masonic principles while celebrating their local distinctions.
Congratulations to Brothers Tomas Curwen, Jose Fuentes, and Andrew Holms, on reaching this significant milestone in their Masonic journey. The evening will be remembered as a testament to the power of family, collaboration, and brotherhood. |
