George F. Daskam
Grand Master
1858 – 1859
Brother George F. Daskam, after whom Daskam Lodge, No. 84, A.F. and A.M. was named, began his Masonic career in St. John’s Lodge, No. 6, A.F. and A.M. of Norwalk, Connecticut by being raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on September 14, 1845. The next year he was appointed Senior Deacon of his Lodge and he became Worshipful Master in 1848.
He was active in York Rite Masonry, being exalted in Washington Chapter, No. 24, RAM on December 12, 1845. He served as High Priest of his, Chapter for the years 1853, 1854, 1855 and 1859. He was active in Council affairs and served as MP Grand Master in 1858. He was knighted in Clinton Commandery, No. 3, KT in 1847 and served as Eminent Commander from 1854 through 1861. He was Grand Commander of the Grand Cornmandery of Connecticut for the year 1859.
In the Grand Lodge of Connecticut, he was appointed Grand Junior Deacon in 1851 and continued through the chairs until he was elected Most Worshipful Grand Master on May 12, 1858.
During the Civil War, he served the Union well. He was a private in the Second Connecticut Light Battery from 1862-65. He was always interested in GAR activities after the war.
In his church life, he was an active member of the Episcopal Church of Norwalk, and he had this interest until his death. His vocation in life was that of a wholesale grocer. He was taken to the Grand Lodge on High on December 28, 1877 from his home in Norwalk, where he lived from the time of his birth on May 8, 1818. His body is buried in St. Paul’s Churchyard Cemetery on the Green in his Home Community.
