Request for help on Friday and Saturday for Cookie Sale and Day with Santa  on 11/29/2023

Hello,

I hope you are doing well.  Sue Bay is looking for some help on Friday evening and Saturday.  Please see her message below.  Any help you can provide is appreciated.

Good luck and have a nice evening,

Jim Irvine

651-500-5356

Message from Sue that was sent out earlier this week:

This is a reminder to all our Sisters and Brothers that we have 2 Holiday Events next Saturday, December 2nd,  Queen Esther's Cookie Sale (Yumm)  and our Lodge and Star Day with Santa, and we need your help and support.

Friday, December 1st Queen Esther members will meet at the Lodge kitchen to prepare some cookies and set up tables for the Cookie Sale.
At the same time we would like to have some of our Masonic Brethren join us to put up the Christmas trees and decorations.  We definitely need our brothers help getting the decorations out and into the social hall.

We will meet at about 6:00 pm Friday to make some cookies and decorate. We will share Pizza with anyone coming who wishes to dine with us.  If you want to join us for Pizza, please call or email Worthy Matron Ann Alberg, so she can have a count to order Pizza.
Ann Alberg  651-434-7811   email    thesweetee@yahoo.com

Saturday the cookie sale begins at 9:00 am, although we do open the front door and   give numbers for service to customers about 8:30.   Bring your cookies either Friday evening or at 8:00 Saturday.
Be sure to tell your friends about the sale - and that cookies sell out fast!!

After the cookie sale ends (about 10:30) we will prepare for Santa's Visit.
The Day with Santa begins at 12:30 pm Saturday, and goes until 2:30 pm.
We can use your help with this event as well.
Especially tell your friends and family to bring kids or Grandkids for a chance to decorate cookies, do crafts and get an opportunity to tell Santa what they want for Christmas. (and have a photo opportunity, too!)

Contact for information on Day with Santa for Star is Ann Zastera   email anniemeg@gmail.com
I believe John Hawthorne would be a Lodge contact for this.  jghawthorne1990@gmail.com

We hope to see many of our Sisters and Brothers this weekend, and get into the holiday spirit together.

Newport Lodge #118 Delivering Hamish to Hector Lodge try 2  on 10/16/2023

Hello,

Let's try this again.  Last time we had to delay the delivery at the last minute.  Hamish, the traveling cow trophy has been found and is back in our care.  Hamish was presented to us last April by Mizpah Lodge.  Hamish made a journey to Grand Lodge and was abducted while on display with the rest of the traveling trophies from around the state.

As tradition dictates we now need to pass Hamish on to a new lodge.  Three Brothers from Newport Lodge are needed to properly deliver the trophy.  We have an opportunity to do so this Monday, October 23, at Hector Lodge in St Paul.  They meet at 6:30. The address is 1898 Iglehart Ave Saint Paul, .MN 55104.  If you are interested in helping deliver Hamish please let me know.  Frank says the dress code is coat and tie.

Thank you for your consideration and have a nice evening,

Jim Irvine

Delivery of Hamish is postponed.  on 09/24/2023

Hello,

Due to lack of responses and other items (my short notification for one) we will not be delivering Hamish this month.  We will instead try again next month on Monday October 23rd.

Good luck and have a nice evening,

Come early and enjoy a great breakfast along with seeing some friends you may have not seen for a while.

As with other fundraisers, volunteer help is necessary. If you would like to volunteer, either show up or give one of us a call to reserve your task of preference.  Your willingness to share a few hours of your time is greatly appreciated.

June 12th Meeting Reminder  on 06/05/2023

Hello,

I hope all is well with you and your family and friends.  This message is a reminder that the June 12th lodge meeting will be held at Jack Morehouse’s assisted living apartment building instead of the lodge.  The facility is located at 1850 University Ave W, in St. Paul, MN.  This building is part of the Episcopal senior housing complex. It is not far from where Porky's restaurant used to be, for those familiar with St Paul history. There are no stairs to navigate to get to the room where the meeting will be held. There is plenty of space in the room.  A light dinner, sandwiches chips etc., will be served starting at 6pm.  The lodge meeting we'll begin at 7:00pm.    A special desert or perhaps after meeting snack will be served.  It should be a nice evening.  If you plan on attending please let me know so I can get the right amount of food.  Those of you that have replied already, thank you for letting me know.

If you would like to attend and would like a ride let me know and I will try to get you one.

I hope to see you there.  Good luck and have a nice evening,

Newport Lodge upcoming events  on 05/29/2023

Hello,

I hope you are having a nice Memorial Day weekend. First off, I would like to say thank you to all those that served in our country’s military. Without your efforts and sacrifices we would not be where we are today.

Next, as Steve mentioned in a previous notice, the June stated meeting will be moved to WB Jack Morehouse’s Assisted Living bldg. located at 1850 University Ave W, in St. Paul, MN.  This building is part of the Episcopal senior housing complex. It is not far from where Porky's restaurant used to be.  We will be having a light dinner before the meeting at the facility.  We will be bringing in the food so I would greatly appreciate it if you would let me know if you plan on attending.  You can call or text me at 651-500-5356 (please leave a message if I don’t answer) or email at ja_irvine@hotmail.com.  The room is on the ground floor and is easily accessible.  There is off street parking, but spaces cannot be reserved, so please consider carpooling if possible.  If you would like to attend but would like a ride to the meeting, please let me know and we can try and get you one.  It should be a nice evening, and all can attend a meeting without having to navigate any stairs!

The lodge participated in the St Paul Park Gardens in the Park event earlier this month.  A big thank you to those that set up the event and manned the cookie booth.  This event was sponsored by the St Paul Park recreation department.  They are the same folks that organize the movies in the park events that the lodge supports.  More information will be sent out this summer regarding opportunities to help with movies.

We will be having the annual pancake breakfast in conjunction with Heritage Days this year.  I was told by the St Paul Park parks and recreation director that Heritage Days will be moved back to the third weekend in August.  This is good news as the following weekend is the Shrine MSA event in Alexandria.  Now you can attend both if you like.

All the above would have made a nice article for the Fraternal Focus that Sue Bay publishes each month, if I would have made the deadline.  Sue does a great job with the newsletter, and I apologize for not getting the article in on time.

Finally, a reminder that the lodge will be going dark for July and August.  I hope you, your families and friends have a safe and happy summer.  Enjoy the nice weather and long days,

There will be opportunities to help prior to the breakfast if you can't make it such as removing the countertop and setting up the Lodge. WB Al Rieder, JR. This event tends to be a little more laided back and is a great time to have a nice morning with others you haven't seen in a while.

The Easter Star will be having a bake sale that morning so there will be goodies galore.

Thank you for considering helping.

On Being A Lodge Officer  on 01/04/2022
Each year a new set of officers is elected and appointed to lead Newport Lodge #118 for the next year. Some have served before but most are new officers. Each year, it the responsibility of the incoming Master to have suitable members serve different posts. I thought that I would give you a little Lodge Education Session on the officers and their duties.

There are 5 elected positions - Master, Senior Warden, Junior Warden, Treasurer, Secretary.

The Master is the president, the Senior Warden is the 1st vice president, and the Junior Warden is the 2nd vice president. Treasurer is responsible for all monies of the lodge and paying them out, while the Secretary records the proceedings of the lodge and hands all monies to the Treasurer.

The Master, Senior Warden and Junior Warden are part of what is called a progressive line. This line is also assumed to progress but it does not have to. This means when you are elected as the Junior Warden, it is assumed that you will progress through the rest of the positions, or chairs, so that you would be Master in a couple of years. The positions of the Treasurer and Secretary are not part of a progression. Once elected, they are usually reelected each year to the same positions.

There are also a number of appointed positions, some are considered part of the progressive line while others are not. Appointed officer positions that are considered part of the progressive line are Senior Deacon, Junior Deacon, Senior Steward, Junior Steward. Other appointed officers are Lodge Education Officer or LEO, Chaplain, Marshal, Tyler. In total there are 13 officers.

The progressive line of officers is similar to Masonry in general. As you increase in knowledge, your duties will correspondingly increase. Most of the progressive line officers have parts in both opening and closing of the lodge as well as in the degree ritual.

In the Masonic Manual, on Page 58, you can find the installation of the Lodge officers and the various duties assigned to each both symbolically as well as functionally. In addition, each Lodge has certain duties assigned to different officers. These could be the organizing of a pancake breakfast or dinner, meals for the meetings or degrees, being the Master during a particular degree, and more. In all cases, the members of the Lodge are there to support and help you be successful in your position.

Each year we need members to fill different officer positions and every current Master Mason is eligible to hold office. There are 1 or 2 positions still open for this year that have very limited responsibilities that would give you an opportunity to give it a try. If you would like to know more about being an officer, please let me know, Frank Spevak, Past Master, Lodge Education Officer. You can reach me by cell phone at 651-214-3673, or email fspevak@gmail.com.
