Welcome to Morning Star Lodge No. 3 and Its Legacy
Morning Star Lodge No. 3 is one of the oldest and most historically significant Prince Hall Affiliated Masonic lodges in Virginia . For more than 160 years, it has been a beacon of light in Portsmouth and the surrounding communities -- bulding leaders, supporting families and strengthening the foundation of Prince Hall Freemasonry.
OUR BEGINNING
As Prince Hall Freemasonry grew after the Civil War, Rising Sun Lodge #2 in Norfolk experienced tremendous growth. In 1865, the brothers voted to divide the lodge so that each area could be better served. Morning Star Lodge #3 was organized to serve Portsmouth, Nansemond County (now Suffolk), Chesapeake, and communities extending to the North Carolina State line. At the same time, Eastern Light Lodge #4 was established to serve northen Norfolk and surrounding areas.
WHY #3?
There was some uncertainty over whether Morning Star or Eastern Light was organized first. Rather than allowing the question to create division, the brethren resolved it in true Masonic spirit "where no contention should ever exist." Thus, Morning Star received #3 and Eastern Light Received #4. This also demonstrated the timeless principle of "who can best work and best agree."
OUR COMMITMENT TODAY
Guided by our rich past and strengthened by our bond, Morning Star Lodge No. 3 continues to uphold the timeless principles of Freemasonry; mentor and develop future leaders; support youth and educational programs; serve our community with compassion; and to preserve our legacy for generations to come.
