Welcome to H. L. Harris Lodge No. 237!

H. L. Harris #237 was chartered on December 10, 1922 in memory of PRWGS Dr. Harrison Llewellyn Harris (1855-1920). Dr. Harris was raised to the sublime degree of a Master Mason in Sheba Lodge #17 in Petersburg, VA. In 1882, he was elected to the Grand Lodge of Virginia as the Right Worshipful Grand Secretary, a title he held for 38 years until his death on November 20, 1920. In 1902, in accordance with the Grand Lodge's wishes, RWGS Harris published a book titled Harris' Masonic Handbook, which was regarded as the order's official textbook. Among his other accomplishments, he organized the Order of the Eastern Stars in the jurisdiction of Virginia. 

H. L. Harris 237 was established on September 29, 1921. At its inception, M. C. Clark was Worshipful Master, M. A. Norrell was Senior Warden, and W. B. Wilson was Junior Warden , there were 56 brothers on the roll. H. L. Harris #237 originally and still holds its meetings on the third Tuesday of every month at 8 p.m. The meetings were held at 511 East Clay Street for several years. The meetings were then moved to 1000 West Marshall Street for a few years until, in 1963, the lodge joined with 8 other lodges and purchased a building at 520 N. 25th Street. 

Through the years, H. L. Harris has remained a small and humble lodge and has produced three Grand Lodge Officers:

  • WPM Robert L. Johnson, Grand Lodge Budget Committee
  • WPM Harold G. Brown, Grand Lodge I.T. Committee; Worshipful Junior Grand Steward
  • WPM John F. Gardner, Past Worshipful Assistant District Deputy Grand Master
